Hans Namuth:
Selected Portraits 1950-1981
It is said by those associated
with photographer Hans Namuth that his professional demeanor
and charismatic personality enabled him to expose, photographically,
another aspect of his subject’s persona; putting the
artist at ease as they worked on their art while being photographed—curiously,
the artist as art.
It is believed that this talent
and ability advanced his career and, in some cases, aided
the careers of those he photographed. Musicians, visual artists,
writers and architects were the focus of his work, and included
such luminaries as Jackson Pollack, Jasper Johns and Frank
Lloyd Wright. For those who appreciate the field of photography,
and more specifically the work of Hans Namuth, an exhibit
featuring his work will run through mid-October at the Marianne
Courville Gallery in Hudson, NY. The gallery is only open
on weekends and by appointment. Please call the gallery for
hours and additional information.
Realist Landscapes
The work of Hale Johnson is often
compared to the work of Andrew Wyeth and Eric Sloane. Timeworn
weathered buildings, barns and fields are the subject of his
landscape paintings, and suggest a presence of current or
impending weather that sets the mood of the scene. Many of
these landscape paintings are of local landscapes, however,
Johnson does travel throughout New England, Ireland, England
and Scotland discovering places and landscapes that render
a similar history or mood. His appreciation of, and attention
to, detail is demonstrated in his work. A collection of his
work is featured at the Harrison Gallery Williamstown, MA,
during the month of August. The show opens on August 2nd.
I might also suggest a visit to the Green River Gallery in
Millerton, NY (518-789-3311), which specializes in the works
of Eric Sloane, for your comparison, and to round out your
exploration or introduction to the work of Hale Johnson.

Master sculptor Andrew DeVries,
of DeVries Fine Art International, will open his studio, located
in Middlefield, MA, to the public the weekend of August 16th
and 17th, where he will demonstrate and explain the various
stages involved in the art of bronze casting and sculpture.
This is the only opportunity for the public to witness his
casting demonstrations this year, and is also a perfect opportunity
to view his studio. How often can one claim that they saw
an artist at work, or were privy to their creative space?
While DeVries guides visitors through his studio, they will
see new sculptures in various stages of development, and many
finished works as well. Consider planning a visit to his gallery
space in Lenox, MA where additional sculptures may also be
viewed.
